Aiming high, the first beta release shall already include pretty ajax'fied search capabilities. So I've been diving into JQuery and JQuery UI. My goal is to make finding rides as quick as possible, and in my opinion a lot of time is wasted on entering dates in web apps. So I'll make it as easy as possible: click once to search for rides on a specific day, click twice to select a range of days. No submit, no dropdowns, no nothing.
Expect the next update when that is finished.

Development launched
I hit the ground running. In a seminar at my university a friend and me had to develop a prototype application to showcase the Django web development framework. Obviously, I was all for developing a ride sharing site, this being my little dream project. We just handed in our paper, including a fabulous prototype.
The past couple of days I could find a little spare time, so anxious to get started, I twiddled with Django a little and came up with an all new, shiny & serious database layout for storing and, more importantly, quickly retrieving shared rides that span multiple destinations.
I have quite a few ideas about how ridesharers.com should be looking and am planning on blogging about those in the near future. I'd be happy if this interests you enough to stick around and help out with ideas & suggestions!
So with my ideas about the database layout working fine, I'm ready to take my first steps with developing the interface. Unfortunately, there's also exams coming up, so I don't know how fast progress is going to be. But I'm very excited about this!
